Michael is a founding partner of Melwani & Chan LLP. He practices in the areas of Intellectual Property, Banking, and Corporate law. Prior to founding Melwani and Chan LLP he worked at a clean tech start-up in Shanghai, China. Michael was formerly Associate Corporate Counsel at United Commercial Bank and East West Bank, a publicly traded California based bank. (NASDAQ: EWBC). He advised the bank on capital raises, SEC investigations, shareholder lawsuits, and regulatory compliance issues. He also worked extensively on complex loan sales and syndication, real estate workouts and REO sales. Michael started his legal career with the entertainment law firm Anthony Arther &Associates in New York City.
Michael is also a regular contributor to CommonAccord, which aims to turn law into programmable code.
Michael is licensed to practice law in New York and Connecticut. He received his Juris Doctorate from Yeshiva University’s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City and his B.S. in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Michael is a member of the New York City Bar Association and a former member of the Real Property Law Committee at the New York City Bar Association. Prior to law school he worked as an archeologist in Wisconsin and on the Aleutian Islands, located off the tip of the Alaskan Peninsula, where he helped excavate a 3500 year-old Aleut fishing village.
Anil is a founding partner of Melwani & Chan LLP. He has been practicing law since 2005, representing the intellectual property and business interests of his clients. Anil practices primarily in the areas of copyright law, trademark law, securities litigation, investor rights, and intellectual property litigation. Prior to founding Melwani & Chan LLP, Anil worked as in-house counsel for Royal Silk Direct, Inc. where he protected its business and intellectual property interests, which include the Royal Silk® clothing and products brands, by using strategy, dispute resolution, intellectual property filings, online and offline enforcement, contracts, and litigation before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Before joining Royal Silk in 2006, Anil was associated with the boutique New York City law firm Lee & Kelley LLP where he practiced in the areas of corporate and securities law, residential real estate closings, and trademark filings and enforcement.
Anil is licensed to practice law in New York. He received his Juris Doctorate from Yeshiva University’s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City, where he completed the Intensive Trial Advocacy Program and received a concentration in Intellectual Property Law. He graduated from New York University as an undergraduate studying music technology, sound recording, and cello. Anil is the cellist in an all-attorney piano trio that performs in the Friday Evening Chamber Music concerts at the New York City Bar Association.
